Llef is an old Welsh Song, traditionally sung by Male Voice Choirs and Miners. The Song (or Theme) Llef is introduced with a string quartet made up of Violin, Viola and 2 Cellos. The music continues in various guises with Strings, Brass, Choir and Organ weaving in and out of various themes and motifs. The first half of the piece is mostly made up of a solemn and reflective interplay between solo and ensemble instruments. The music starts to become busier and fuller in texture and utilizing various orchestral techniques such as sul pont, tremolo and pizzicato strings. There is a brief move into 12/8 with the introduction of a more triumphant music played over field drum and toms, before a return to the original 4/4 time signature. The Llef Theme continues to appear in various guises with the final quarter of the music becoming more martial and bombastic, with full Orchestra and Tubular Bells appearing over a persistent, driving ostinato, played on Cellos, Double Basses, Trombones and French Horns. The music becomes more brutal sounding, continuing in a dramatic manner and culminating in a Grand Finale with Choir and full Orchestra playing a triumphant rendition of the Llef music.
