Grieg Åsa's Death

Grieg Åsa's Death

A young man tell fantastical stories to his ailing mother, not realising she has died while he is in the process of telling them. Scored for string orchestra this piece combines loyalty, tranquility and tragedy growing from a hush to a climax and then ebbing away to silence.

The Incidental music to Peer Gynt, Op. 23, was written in 1875 by Edvard Grieg for Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen’s play of the same name. Åsa’s death is the second movement of Peer Gynt Suite No. 1, Op. 46.
