Hi there!

The vocal version and instrumental are perfectly aligned. You can accomplish the effect you explained by putting the vocal version on one track and the instrumental version on another, and cutting or muting between them as you desire. You just have to make sure that the crossover points are exactly the same for it to sound flawless. Also use the.wav versions when editing not the mp3 versions.
