“Almost Too Serious” by Robert Schumann is from the set “Kinderszenen” or “Scenes from Childhood.” In this work, Schumann provides us with his adult reminiscences of childhood. Schumann had originally written 30 movements for this work, but chose 13 for the final version.
The piece is great for scenes that are serious but have a humorous undertone. The sample video shows a woman who looks serious but is actually stifling a smile. The ambiguity of the piece is great for keeping the audience “in the dark” before revealing a character’s true intensions.
