Mussorgsky The Gnome

Mussorgsky The Gnome

Music Description

Pictures at an Exhibition (Pictures from an Exhibition – A Remembrance of Viktor Hartmann; French: Tableaux d’une exposition) is a suite in ten movements (plus a recurring, varied Promenade) composed for piano by Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky in 1874.

The music depicts a gnome clumsily running with crooked legs. The original sketch is thought to represent a design for a nutcracker with large teeth. The lurching music, in contrasting tempos with frequent stops and starts, suggests the movements of the gnome. The instability of the music makes it great for Halloween-themed projects.
