Pictures at an Exhibition (Pictures from an Exhibition – A Remembrance of Viktor Hartmann; French: Tableaux d’une exposition) is a suite in ten movements (plus a recurring, varied Promenade) composed for piano by Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky in 1874.
This piece depicts two men, one rich and one poor – hence the names Goldenburg and Schmuyle. The exotic scales used in this piece give it an abstract, and foreign feel, making it great for scenes set in a distant land or from a long time ago.
