Melancholy is the fifth of Lyric Pieces Op. 47 by famous Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg. Lyric Pieces is a collection of 66 short pieces for solo piano published in 10 volumes. Opus 47 is the fourth book composed between 1886 and 1888.
Although the name of this piece is Melancholy, its melancholy does not exhibit the darkness and emotional depth heard in certain works by Chopin or Rachmaninov. Grieg shows a lighter approach to a serious subject in this piece. That said, it is hardly a happy piece. The gloomy main theme moves along to an animated middle section with a brighter tension and resolution. I have played this piece on a Steinway concert piano. It is ideal for your projects needing a darker romantic solo piano piece.
