The ultra famous popular classic from Achille Claude Debussy’s Bergamasque Suite. It comes from the Impressionist movement of music, written some time between 1890 and 1905 and takes it’s name from the poem by Paul Verlaine.
It is an intensely passionate, soft, expressive and romantic piano piece which evokes feelings of sadness and beautiful melancholy.
The name ‘Clair de Lune’ is French for ‘Moonlight’ and a line from the Verlaine poem describes the piece really nicely:
“Au calme clair de lune triste et beau, Qui fait rêver les oiseaux dans les arbres Et sangloter d’extase les jets d’eau, Les grands jets d’eau sveltes parmi les marbres.”
“With the still moonlight, sad and beautiful, That sets the birds dreaming in the trees And the fountains sobbing water jets of ecstasy, The tall slender fountains among marble statues.”
