Hi WPExplorer, I’ve had a look into this and I think the problem is that the error messages the upload page is giving out are telling you to do the wrong thing entirely
I’ll try and deploy and update for those error messages first thing tomorrow, but in the meantime the format you need to upload is just a zip containing a single folder, and that folder is named after your theme. None of this /theme/theme_name/ business that you’re being told when there’s an error
I’ve uploaded the file that you got to us (via Kai Loon) after re-zipping it as just the “Surplus” folder (containing index.php and everything else) and it’s accepted ok.
I’m not sure where the misleading error message came from, but I hope these helps clear things up. Sorry about that
@lucas looking forward to the update, thank you!!
@lucas – the thing is I tried in various ways and always got the same error… eventually I ignored the error message and just kept trying zipping in various ways.
Also it always worked with a mac, just not pc.
We’ll looking forward to the update and thanks for being on top of this guys!
Hi WPExplorer, the fixed error message should be live now; If you’re still having issues creating the zip files on windows could you send me an example windows created zip file, and a description of how you created it, to <my forum username>@envato.com and I’ll have a poke around and try and work out why it’s not being accepted
I tried to update my theme today and got the same error as before (I’m on win7). My ZIP contains only one folder.
It seems to be working now…But you can’t just right click on the folder and select “Send To -> Compressed”. You need to actually open the theme folder and select all files and folders inside and then right click and select “send to -> compressed” .
That’s rather strange, I usually create a new ZIP and paste the files in it, and had no problems with that method anywhere else. I’ll give it a try with “send to” next time.
I’m getting the same errors… even with the “select all files” method… really strange. The error posted says there needs to be a folder at the top level, not files.
Any updates on this?
Update: I was able to get it to work by using WinRAR with one small twist (WinRAR usually makes RAR files – but it can also make a ZIP if you tell it to):
1. Select your full theme folder (the whole outside folder, not the files inside)
2. Right click > add to archive
3. Select ZIP as the compression method.
I tried the method of selecting all of the files and doing the same thing with WinRAR and the error message read that it found all of my theme sub-directories (assets, stylesheets, etc.) – so that was super helpful… but the default windows zipper app definitely doesn’t seem to work .
(for the devs: I’m guessing that the Windows compressor adds an invisible file that blows things up on the server – I could be wrong, but this seems like the most logical answer if this is only happening for folks using the default Windows zip method).
Hope this helps someone!
