Iv basically converted a script into a WP plugin, the jQuery has been updated to 1.7 standards by me and also modified to word with WP nicely – iv then added a admin page to allow users to input the elements as well (as it made it easier for me)

would i be able to offer this in here if i have an extended license for what the project is originated on?

Thanks folks, Danny

Personally I would ask the original item author first. The original author will find out sooner or later, so if you have permission from them and you have the extended licence then everything should be fine.

Best of luck,

Well iv setup a demo of what iv made and am now just awaiting the authors response

Im wondering though if he says its not ok and i have an extended license, what are my options and why would an extended license benefit me?

I thought that might be the case. The author should be pleased that you contacted them before just going ahead and listing the item.

Best to send an email into support explaining the situation. Support may just tell you to upload the item and let the reviewer deal with the item approval process.

As always, best to start working on a second item incase this item doesn’t make it through the approval process.

I assume your question is specific to the CodeCanyon – javascript files. You can find the answer on the item page itself (near the Extended licence button) :

a website template for sale (including on ThemeForest or ActiveDen) – Details

I don’t have official reference to support this point, but with common sense I guess any author won’t restrict using Extended license on outside the marketplace from where it purchased. And the buyer not even need to get author permission with such case (Ex: including with website template).

Also it makes sense to get permission from the original author in case the final product going to compete directly with the original file on same marketplace (purchased on CC – selling on CC). Whatever may be the wrapper, essentially sales happens due to the original concept / design.

Note that unless it was mentioned on “message to reviewer”, the file have chances to get approved with the assumption that all the assets are owned by the uploader. Which may lead to future DMCA struggles.

Also support can’t give more detailed answer to license related questions (for example, can I include X along with my Y). So always better to put efforts to learn more on the license terms page.

Maybe, but it’s bad karma in my opinion. Nevertheless, converting a script into a plugin does not qualify as appropriate extended license usage in my opinion. I’ve read the extended licensing many times, and the impression I get from all of the examples given is that extended licenses are intended to enhance a much larger project. For example, if you build a website and include some social icons from GraphicRiver, or you build a website and include a music player from CodeCanyon.

I know we’ve discussed this topic before, but ActiveDen’s extended licensing has additional verbiage that says extended license purchases can not be remixed and resold in other marketplace items. I agree with this partially, and think extended licensing needs the following improvements:

  1. No remixing on the same marketplace. This means if you purchase an extended license from CodeCanyon, it can not be used in another CodeCanyon item. However, ThemeForest would be fine.

  2. The extended license verbiage should be updated to state the following: “A marketplace item purchased with an extended license must not be the dominant part of your project. It is instead meant to ‘enhance’ a much larger body of work”.

I’m not a lawyer and have no idea how to write legal mumbo jumbo, but basically what I’m driving at is that your project needs to be able to exist on its own without the marketplace item. For example, a website template would still hold up fine without social icons or a music player.

A possible alternative is to make a WP plugin that “extends” another marketplace item. Sure the buyer would have to purchase both products, but this is a great solution in my opinion because then everyone wins.

Long post, but if you got this far you are a trooper :P I frequently get asked about extended licenses from ThemeForest authors, and would love to turn on extended licensing, but don’t do so for this specific scenario. And I know some other CC authors who are in the same boat.
