I get a lot of my inspiration from Charlie Clouser, former Nine Inch Nails member and a well know composer of dark, almost industrial style music. Here’s a very typical song from him:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vvMTqNy8Yqk&feature=relatedI’m awfully inspired by the following:
The Everly Brothers: just listen to those harmonies. The Louvin Brothers: just listen to those harmonies! Cocteau Twins: sonic luxury My Bloody Valentine: more sonic luxury
As much as I admire those one man or woman shows at first with all that technology around it nowadays, I must say I’m getting pretty bored real quick and it always seems a little sad to me …. like the loneliness of the homestudio carried onto a stage.
So for me it’s great bands. Four guys (or girls
) rocking the stage with simple rock setup. There’s nothing like a band energy for me: I remember few years ago I got blown away by “Orson”, when they opened for Robbie Williams in Olympia Stadium. (Yeah, Robbie, I know, but it really was a gift from one of my students – I’d never spend 75€ to see Mr. Williams, lol ) Robbie looked pretty pale after those four guys.
Richard Bona always inspires me, as a singer and bassplayer. I never get tired of listening to Talk Talk and Mark Hollis, Pink Floyd, Radiohead…. Damien Rice for the calmer notes and sadness….and – great for AJ, I’m still a big fan of straight forward rock a la U2 or Simple Minds
But, it’s one thing to listen to your favourite bands – but there are only few who simply seem to be able to transfer that special energy that immediately makes me want to pick up an instrument or sing. It always happens to me when I watch Mike Mangini play drums. I don’t know – I’m really not such a big fan of all the bands he played it, be it Steve Vai or Dream Theater lately, but he always manages to spark the flame in me again. He’s got that incredible energy and he seems such a great guy, I hope I’ll meet him someday
I remember when I saw him at the Dream Theater auditions, I immediately went to my drum rehearsal room/cellar few streets away – and it was already late friday night

Agree’d about seeing a live band. Nothing like it when a great band rocks a venue. The synergy and energy is amazing.
