I use Audacity. Many people underestimate the usefulness of Audacity. First off, it’s entirely free and second, there are many plugins which you can download to help expand your capabilities. I have at least 100 plugins on my current version of Audacity, and let me tell you, I’ve looked around for other sound and music programs, but I have yet to find anything as useful as Audacity for me.
On a less-relevant note, I don’t write music yet. I only do sound effects for now.
