I will post my experience also here, in case it could be useful for someone else…
I have put an album on iTunes about an year ago, using the services provided by TuneCore (just search for “Andrea Baroni” on iTunes and you will see it…
).
Unfortunately you can’t interact directly with Apple (as in the case of iPhone applications), unless you are a music label.
Anyway, the service provided by TuneCore is very good, and it’s not expensive. You pay $19.98 per album per year, plus 0.99 for every other stores you choose to be in (you can add for example Napster, Rhapsody, Amazon, Amie Street, etc…).
Rates are good.. TuneCore keeps nothing from your sales. Only Apple will get a share, but it’s something around 30%
You can also put single songs on iTunes, but it’s not convenient. If you can arrange some of your songs in an album (maybe assembling those with a similar style) it’s better for promotional purposes and costs.
Remember that people will buy music there only for listening or entertaining purposes, so too many different styles together it’s not a good practice.
But in the end don’t expect too many sales, unless you are setting up also a very very good promotional campaign
It’s very difficult to compete with “big” names…

I’ve also used TuneCore and must say I’ve had a very positive experience with them. It’s a very cheap and easy way to get your music into iTunes, and if you are committed to marketing and promoting yourself effectively, you can make some pretty impressive sales.
I just checked out your album, bluegestalt / Andrea, wow, very impressive! Really like the diversity and the male / female vocal combinations throughout the album. I just purchased two of your tracks by the way, Silent Signals, and Slightly Across.
Does anyone else have any of their music on iTunes?

I have a few (relatively old) releases available on iTunes (search for Daniel Djorgimajkoski) and other online-stores. There’s also a 2CD-set sampler (ibiza chillout classics – a worldwide ZYX -music release) available in stores and online.
danielku, thanks for those links, I’m was looking for some self distribution resources too, beside the label distribution.
bluegestalt and scottwills, thank you guys for sharing your experiences with TuneCore – I’ll check it out.
