I’m curious, how does this +1 thing tie into organic SEO ? Has Google made any announcements that its algorithm will be accounting for the +1’s or is this being assumed at the moment?

No official announcements as far as I know. Search Engine Watch report on an experiment to see how +1 affect search results. It’s quite interesting. Read it here:

I doubt it has any real effect on organic rankings. It’s far too easily manipulated. I mean look at this voting thing here. They just want you to go click the +1’s for them in hopes of getting a ranking boost. Everyone that believes this has an effect is already doing this, so Google’s results would be garbage in no time if this was considered with any real weight.
