Hi guys, I need some hard clean facts on the difference between a “Variation” and a “Sound Pack”, in regards to sound fx.
If I have 5 sounds, do I put them in one file with space between or save them as individual files? I thought if they all sounded roughly the same, then put them in one file as a variation. And if they’re different aspects of something (car drive-by, car stop, car door open, car honk, etc) then that would be a pack.
Seems different reviewers have their own idea of what it should be. It doesn’t matter to me either way, but I would really like to have some solid guidelines to follow. I really don’t understand why these things haven’t been clearly written out for us to follow.
Can someone shed some light on this seemingly mystical art?
Basically it’s pretty simple. If the set is comprised of notably different sounds, like the car examples you gave above, then it’s a straight sound pack.
If you have a group of sounds that are by nature very similar to one another, like 5 of the same sounds with very similar sounding timbres, arrangements, or the same sound slightly pitched, it will count as a variation and the variation should not count toward the total set price.
In a pack, it may be that there is a combination of different sounds, some of which are variations and some of which are not. For example, if in your car example the mentioned items were there, but also with very similar alternate takes of the stated sounds included, then those additional takes would be deemed variations and would not add to the cost of the pack. Reviewers do reserve the right to disallow excess variations, e.g. if a set of 25 takes of the same HONK were submitted, with not very dissimilar lengths, then the submitter may be asked to trim down the content to include fewer takes, i.e. the more distinguishable ones.
Also, to your question, if all the sounds are essentially different, e.g. your car example again, they could be submitted both individually, and in a set aswell. It’s the very close variations that should not be submitted individually.
Such is the way of things, currently. Hope that makes some sense.
