I’ve always wondered what the standard rates were for custom music scoring. I mean who decides it, and where do you go to find out about this kind of stuff? I mean yes it must depend on the complexity of the piece but where do we go to find out how to gauge the value?

Any ideas? I know $200 per minute pops up a lot, some go $750 a song.

I’ve been having this problem lately with a job too. Creating two custom tracks which are about 4 mins long each for a client. You have to either base it on how much you think you should earn an hr for your trade, then multiply that by the amount of hrs you spent on the project, or decide on a price per track basis, or charge per minute of music

Its a tough one – you learn as you go really…you’re a really good composer, so you should be charging quite a lot for your services – the prices you said above would be what I would expect someone like you to charge in my opinion

thanks MfM, coming from you it’s a real compliment. As much as i’d love to start charging 200 a minute I don’t think I have the credentials just yet.

I’ve talked to a lot of composer friends and a few said you should feel out the budget of the product. If the product has a 20k budget for example, request a percent rather then a flat rate. Also include royalties etc etc.

MfM, how much are you charging for those 2 tracks you made? And will they be available to hear on your site?
