Redesigning an old theme. Is it worth it?

I’ve started redesigning one of my old themes to release an updated v2 version. I’m now thinking as that theme is so old would it be better to release a brand new theme. At least that way it’ll appear on the home page and get more exposure.

I think I mentioned this over twitter, but my plan would be:

Take an older theme and re-imagine it. Then release it as a new theme. I would then offer customers of the older theme a free upgrade to the new one.

@mikedidthis – Yeah you did mention it and I’m using your idea for updating an old theme. I’ve started on the design and it is looking pretty swish so far. Do you think it would be acceptable to call the new theme ‘5 in 1 Tumblr Theme V2’? Or would I need to completely rename it?

I think V2, or something would be fine. I would clearly state the theme is a complete new one, based of an old idea / theme.

Mazoor, I was intending of putting some text asking users of the old theme to contact me via my profile page so I can a) check if they have purchased the old theme b) send them the new theme.

Unless there is a better way to do it?

To clarify, my redux theme would be 90% visually different to the old one, but just touch on it. Some users may prefer to stick with the old etc, but I think its fair to give them an option. With out there support I wouldn’t have got to 3 themes.

Thanks Mike! Yeah I would put a little notice on the themes description to send me a message through my profile for the free version.

The idea is the same but hugely updated design and it will be responsive unlike the old one. Will also have some fancy bits and bobs.

I had a look through other authors themes and quite a few people have uploaded a ‘v2’ version of their old themes and they have done better on sales.
