I’m interested in doing a custom build and would appreciate some advice:
Can anyone recommend a good value for money graphics card. I’ll be using an Intel Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3LR and Intel Core2 Duo E8500 3 .16Ghz (for use with Snow Leopard OSX ).
so you are building a custom build with Snow Leopard? are you hacking the OS? or getting a clone Mac? if so, you probably want to get Nvidia / Geforce or you are going to have a lot of problems.
Hi Daniel Going to attempt a Hackintosh – first came across it here -http://tiny.cc/h9iza
that link its awesome! I tried 1 year ago to build a hackintosh and no success..thanks for the share… (I have a clone mac from Psystar but apple won the legal issue)
I would recommend you get the Nvidia Geforce 9800 GT series, I had the 8800 GTX and its an excelent card (got it like 1 year ago). From what I remember when building my hackintosh a year ago, it was better to get an nvidia since actual Macs have same models (not ATI Radeon) but from your post apparently you can.
One thing I do to test video cards is buy one of 3 options I have and test it out for 1 or 2 weeks and then return it and try another one if I feel the card dont fill out my hardware needs.
Let me know how your project goes. I may even try myself to build one.
Never knew that there were still clones around (they had clones here in SA about 10 years ago (called Power Computers)) never seem ‘em again it was also a legal issue with apple…
Thanks for the advice re: the graphics card.
There used to be a drastic difference between ATI and nVidia. Today, ATI has improved so much that you can even get better performances with a ATI HD VGA .
That said, I would recommend you get one of the latest 9-series of GeForce (i.e. 9800 GTX ) or a ATI HD 5760 . That will do the trick just fine. If you’re looking for really powerful rigs, such as those used for intense visual media or engine-processing, I’d advise getting any ATI or nVidia dual-core, such as many GX2 .

Agree with crozer. I would too suggest GeForce 9800 GTX .
I have a 9800 GX2 , the duel GPU version of the 9800 series and I have to say it’s an amazing card. I got it over 2 years ago when it first came out and it’s still a monster. The only thing I had a problem with was the heat. Easily fixed though… I just ended up pulling off the large, heat retaining metal box they covered it in. Why these companies insist on covering all their hardware in metal with pictures of goblins on the front still perplexes me. Anyway yeah, the 9800 series is top notch.
Thanks, looks like Nvidia Geforce 9800 GT series gets the thumbs up.
