I’m a traditionalist in the sense that I write music, mix and master inside of Cubase a fairly common procedure I’m sure for nearly all members on AJ. I have recently got hold of Reason 5.0, and was wondering if anyone has any experience with it, It seems very “Closed doors” to me, no VST support, and having played around with it for a while it seems like it would take a lot longer to write a track than my normal DAW . I know some people who rave about it, I just wanted to garner some opinion, while I messed around with it.
Well between Fruity and Reason , I noticed that it does take more time to write a track in it. Especially the new automation has been slowing me down comparing to the version 4.
I love Reason, not only because Propellerhead is swedish
The main reason is how easy it is to work with it, at least when you get used to it. Since Propellerhead launched Recorder it’s now a complete DAW in itself. I do recommend using Rewire to connect it to your main DAW though. In Cubase it’s as easy as the click of a button. Might be more complicated in Pro Tools for instance.
I have been using Reason since 3.0 and now with the Record integration into Reason 6.0 (If you feel like dropping some more money you could upgrade from 5.0 to 6.0 for about 150 euros I believe to get Recording features and a few more devices) I really don’t feel like I’m missing something. For me Reason can do it all, even without the VST support. If you don’t get too claustrophobic at first, I’m sure you will really see how easy and all encompassing it is I can understand it must feel a bit odd though coming from cubase or any other DAW for that matter to Reason. Give it a few weeks to get to know the program in detail I would say!
I’ve been looking into Re-wiring Reason into Cubase. My only concern with that is I have most of the top synths, Nexus-Alchemy-Sylenth, and some great drum plug-ins, am I not just relegating Reason into being just another plugin synth, or is there much more to it, am I missing something. People who have Reason seem to love it. Thanks for the comments though, it’s nice to hear from folks who are using it regularly.
Reason 6.5 will support a new technology called “rack extensions” which is a system to add external instruments and fx into reason from other companies, it’s like vst but from propellerheads. For more info check this link http://www.propellerheads.se/news/rackextensions/index.cfm
I’m a HUGE REASON FAN !! I love it and use it on a lot of my work, but the other composers in my team are all logic pro people. If you have any questions about reason, just hit me up! It’s so easy to use once you know how and it’s fast and you can get huge results. Go Propellerhead!!

I`m Ableton live user. Today I still sometimes use Reason as synth on rewire – do not for necessary, but most of the old love for him, because I started writing music with Reason when it was 2.0
Anyway, in Ableton I’ve got everything you need.
Oh, well, I do not know at the expense of all these programs. Maybe I have not experienced. Fruity Loops but 10 is a platform for writing music, and there is also the vst and other programs can be combined with it
