I know this is another moaning post but this is getting a little bit of a joke.

Envato you have had the information for months now, and still no update. (not even a verbal update)

Just recently I have had 3 people come to me and state,

Buyer - can you do x,y,z.

Ourselves - these are customisations, not just little updates, its about 2-3 days work, we can do them but we would need to charge for them.

Buyer - I paid $40 for the theme and dont think I should be charged for support.

Ourselves - I understand what you mean but you have purchased a theme not a custom site. We can only do customisations if we charge.

Buyer - This is bad support I am going to rate 1* if you don’t do it.

Ourselves - This is not support… It’s customisations, we always support our products for any bugs, updates etc… In some cases small customisations such as the odd css change etc…

I woke up to day with one 3* and a 1* from two of them 3 users, so still expecting one more :(

Past a joke!

Granted a lot of users just accept and just ask where they recommend looking for help regarding how to do what they want to achieve which I normally send them links to tutorials, articles and websites like stackoverflow.com

Its been years now with Envato saying its in the pipeline, its now been months since Envato collected information on how to push forward, and yet no update, not even a verbal update.

Surely this is not just tarnishing an item, its Envatos profits also.

Granted my item is still rated 4 and half stars but seeing them 1 stars and 3 stars still put some people off.

It does not look good having twelve 5 stars, two 3 stars, one 1 stars. It makes buyers question the theme, even though its not theme related votes.

I am fed up for always being held to ransom for ratings, especially on new items which rely on the ratings to sell well.

I know we are not entitled for updates on anything Envato does, and its just Envato being a good company by letting us know, but its a little hit and miss.

I noticed you are constantly updating the website with nice little touches which are not needed.

For instance the new footer styling recently, the search function in the hidden files (rolls eyes) which to the life of me can’t undestand why that is really needed, who has that many files in the hidden section…

But the main features which have been around for 4-5 years are still not addressed.

  • The search in comments
  • The search of the actual site items
  • The rating system

These are the main functions that make Envato marketplaces tick.

Just imagine how much more profits Envato and authors would make if these issues were finally solved.

Anyway sorry for my outspoken blast, just dis heartened at waking up to what I feel is a injustice and wanted to vent my anger.

I know most likely, I am about to get a trolling because this is what happens normally for posts like this

but hey :)

My opinion: Whatever you decide to adjust to the current rating system, it will not change the attitude of the buyer.

  • If overall rating on a single item is bad – it says something about the item
  • If overall rating on an author profile is bad – it says something about the author
  • If overall rating on an item is good and a few are bad – it says something about the buyer

  • Changes to the system are not going to change that. Only change that I would welcome: Don’t keep the rating anonymous!

I think an algorithm needs to implemented that if a buyer gives so many 1 star ratings he/she/they should be banned from rating.

No buyer should be anonymous and all the buyers ratings should be made available.

Ratings should have a statement area which is compulsory and there should be a breakdown in star rating.

Customisations should be in bold letters stating this should not be taken into account.

To be fair support should not be taken into account as its not a required field, but I have no issue with that because I offer full support for bugs, updates etc so this is not an issue for myself.

    Except for this bit:

I agree with the other points though. However you can’t tell for sure that these few negative ratings are the exact reasons for a person not to buy an item.
Granted my item is still rated 4 and half stars but seeing them 1 stars and 3 stars still put some people off.
The majority off buyers do have minds that work on their own, and in all fairness the few that don’t ….you don’t want them to buy your item anyway…. ;-)

Edit: For me: on sites like yelp etc I always put rating into perspective of the one that does the rating. If this is someone with a bad attitude you know straight away because all it’s ratings are bad.

I don’t know, it could be a solution, but again it’s putting more emphasis on Envato doing more monitoring of things which, as the marketplaces grow, will become increasingly harder.

But is this not why they get paid 30-67% of all product prices?

The bigger Envato get, the more money they receive which should be invested in growing shouldn’t it.

A couple of good points though :)

Personally I think any rating of 3* or below should also have to give a reason for that rating, it could be a simple multiple choice.

+1000 (but not multiple choice). Also, non anonymous ratings sounds intriguing.

This is also my opinion! But I think a personal comment would be better than multiple choice.

I usually don’t post in threads like this, but just to share recent experience that really upset me. One buyer rated 1, simply because he didn’t get support directly in comment section. We use ticket system and support forum and we do support there. So getting a 1 rating just because someone has to send one email is quite ridiculous.
