Well, in my view, the sound of rain comes from the droplets hitting the ground (obviously) So if you were to use a Cardioid microphone and point it upwards (therefore only recording the sky) it would cut out the noise from underneith, plus you could also raise the mic up off the ground a few meters somehow to decrease rain noise even further 
good point, but remember the higher you raise the mic the higher the roof above it would have to be as the water hitting the roof would make a lot of noise, especially if you’re using cardoid settings and you’re pointing straight up it.
But thanks for that vaisnava, i’m going to go and try that. Just need to wait for a thunderstorm now.
