Some time ago we faced some video format compatibility issues. After then I had a chat with Mark and he suggested from now on to accept only Mov files for video assets and Mov or Flv for video tutorials.

I could not find any evidence that this been publicly announced, but today I found. You can read here: http://wiki.envato.com/selling/selling-rejections/videohive-common-rejection-factors/ Especialy in Documentation section and in Non-Standard codecs section.

Also when tried to implement this in life and rejected few files for this reason I got some complaints from authors. Like why mp4 is not allowed for tutorials and why flv are not allowed for video assets. So i decided to bring this up for those who haven’t noticed it yet. And also for those who want to suggest some other formats and hear Marks opinion and his reasons.

I hope we can discuss this and come up with standards that works for everyone (pc,mac, linux etc) and gain more understanding from authors that these standards are not there just because we wanted to make your life harder.

What about Mp4 for video assets? Don’t forget that there is also few % of authors that have low upload connections, i personaly have 128k, and uploading file 200-300mb can take few hours, afet clicking on Submit :) Page not found….What about that? Are we allowed to upload MP4 as asset?

To be honest, I’ve never had a problem with Quicktime for tutorials… or anything for that matter. At the end of the day, you’d expect people downloading templates to work with video to be using a pro video format as a matter of course.

However, Quicktime and Flash are both proprietary formats. They are owned and there is something to be said for having at least one open standard available to authors.

This isn’t really a question of practicality, so much as being in the spirit of open standards.

MP4 is a fully tried and tested, cross-platform open-standard format. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to have that on the list.

On the other hands, we’re all selling files for use in a proprietary software, so maybe I’m overthinking it a bit.

Yes, sure, AVI and WMV could not be accepted. But I hope MP4 (as asset BUT also as Video Tutorial format) and FLV (as ASSET ) should be accepted. I’m like Miseld…. (“and uploading file 200-300mb can take few hours, afet clicking on Submit Page not found….What about that?”)... and I have no time to waste with very long upload.
