New License Discussion - Authors using items in their themes

Note: To make things easier, we’re splitting the threads into 2. This one is for authors wanting to use other marketplace items in their files. For example, TF authors using CC plugins in their themes. For all other comments or questions, go here.

As you may have already seen, we’ve made some pretty big changes to the marketplace licenses. Here’s Collis’s full announcement, with an explanation of everything that’s changed.

We’d love to hear your feedback and suggestions for further improvement, so please let us know what you think! We’ll be following this thread closely to make sure your voices are heard.

I’ve noticed a lot of people being confused between the “item” and “end product”. The item is what’s sold here on the Envato marketplaces. The end product is what you build with that item. To be clear, you can never distribute the item itself, just the end product. For example, you can’t distribute the photo, but you could give away the flyers that use the photo. With things like themes, the website is the end product. You can never distribute the theme itself. The same applies to code or plugins. You could use them in your website, but not in a theme for sale or one being given away for free. I hope that helps clear things up.

No item based license selection?

Hang on – so the new extended license means that people can no longer include certain slider plugins within Wordpress themes?

EDIT: Reading on it definitely seems that way… that’s going to be interesting

Ok, so far as I understand:

1. To include slider from CodeCanyon in theme, we have to contact slider author to get the permission.

2. Plugins with extended licenses included with themes before these changes are OK.

Is that right?

Keep in mind that this is just for items purchased moving forward. If you purchased a plugin with the old license, that license still applies.

Fair enough Still seems a bit sudden, speaking on behalf of those authors would it be possible for them to put a disclaimer on the item allowing usage with an extended license without contacting them.

That said I’m only guessing, there’s a good chance some authors might welcome this, I’m just thinking, the big selling slider plugins are about to get busy inbox’s!

Edit: We might consider adding a separate use-in-stock license in the future. It would need its own pricing structure and authors would need to be able to opt out of it separately.

Well i see why you had to do this (numerous top sellers are there because they offer double the value in plugins), but this will lower the sales, drastically, of most CC top selling items. Plus it’s not fair for the authors that didn’t purchase ‘em on time.

I want to be 100% crystal clear though. I purchased a few “extended license” items on my personal “Envato” account and my business account that are in fact used in a product I produce. I understand the old license is enforced but from this point on I can no longer purchase items from Envato to use in items I may use in products I produce?

I ask because I have plans to get a few icon sets and some items from CodeCanyon I was hoping to put into a new theme I’m developing. Granted WordPress stuff is GNU/GPL but many of the items I want to purchase from you are not which is why I hoped the extended license would still allow me to build my themes for sale.
