Hi Guys, first post for me in the AJ forum :D. Here there are a lot of composers with much experience, and I’d like to get some infos about a work I will probably do: a documentary film of about 40 minutes.

Here are some questions:

1. Do you compose music when video work and montage are finished? 2. Do you think it’s better using only original music or using other songs from other artists (for example classical music) is also a good idea? 3. Does the composer write a certain number of songs and then the video editor cuts and pastes the music?

Every other info about this field is really appreciate! Thanks in advance.

Giuseppe.

Hi Giuseppe !

i’ve composed for 2 documentaries, for now. I think i can let you know how it gone for me.

1. i have experienced those 2 situations. I’ve composed before the video editing (so, without any images, just texts) and after. Personally, i prefer when the editing is not done (more freedom for the writing)

2. well, if you’re a real composer, you don’t use any other musics… :)

3. actually, it’s better to ask how many tracks or time of music does the director want. And then, you write for.

Hope it helps, and good luck !!
:)

Sometimes film makers want some music (ambience backgrounds) corresponding with movie subject and additionally some themes/stingers from these compositions. But some prefer to have music done to edited movie. With a good composer it gives better results but it’s really custom work and more expensive :)

Hey Carrubba,

Well I would say yes I compose when video work and montage is finished. well half finished actually. And then some of my previous compositions went in the documentary too. Well, because documentaries are usually filled up with more music, I would go with original music although I don’t think it’s wrong to use other songs from other artists as well.

For that last question, usually you’ll want to take the documentary’s viewers on a journey. So the music you put in should be able to drive the mood and emotions. Work with the video editor to create the story and the mood. Remember, video is information while music is emotions!

For friends that helped me with this suggestions, I’ve worked on a temp track with non original musics, that really helped me understand what director wanted for this project.
