Hi guys,

So the university at which I graduated from and now lecture at has asked me if I would like to do a fully funded MPhil leading to a PhD.

However I am having a hard time coming up with research topics and areas.

In terms of where my skills are it would seem that they are based upon ‘practical’ applications due to the nature of my work at university and since graduating.

I see my current strengths in:
Composition for the moving image – Writing to motion picture with obvious cue’s (trailers, games, film etc)
Midi Orchestration – Digital composition and humanization
Post Production – Audio for motion picture (sound design, audio sync, etc)
Design – Graphical User Interfaces, Ergonomics of plugins etc
Acoustics – Something I have a basic understanding of and a keen interest to learn more of.

Areas I would like to integrate into the above fields on both a practical and academic level:
DSP Engineering (MATLAB/C/C++)
Plugin Design and Creation
Acoustics

While I know my current skills are a combination of general music technology fields and are filtered towards the more ‘musical’ side of the industry I feel it is important for me to become versed in the technical aspects of the industry.

Any ideas of what areas I might be able to look into? I cant seem to think of anything that is really getting me excited!

Hey, what an awesome opportunity!

I have been thinking hard of something cool/technical to research and have come up with one idea, it’s a bit ridiculous really but I’m struggling so here it is…

Design a plug-in which allows you to hear a headphone mix through your monitors. I know they’ve already done this the other way round but not sure if they’ve done it this way yet.

So it would somehow add the closeness, possibly get louder, increased bass maybe, all the things to make it feel as if your listening through phones. Could be completely unrealistic but it’s an idea!

I’ll keep an eye on this thread anyway to see what others suggest :)

So great news! The university just got in touch and they have offered me a full scholarship for my PhD! I still need to work to earn money for living costs but they are increasing my part-time lecturing hours, so hopefully that increase combined with AJ will give me enough to live on and pay the bills.

So excited! When I can I will tell you what my research area(s) are but right now I can’t as its quite commercial in theory.

Also I just got a new car, its been an awesome few days!

Good stuff man! Sounds like you’ve been handed an awesome opportunity. My suggestion would be some form of study into MIDI orchestration and the development of convolution based processing software synthesis (plugin). I’m not really sure how to describe it but, for example a lot of metal musicians reamp guitars using convolution speaker modelling, what about using instrument shape convolution modelling on synthetic sounds, adding a different acoustic guitar ‘body IR’ to achieve a different realistic tonal quality.

WHOA, just read that back and nerded myself out, think ill go to bed now!
