So…how do you guys go about marketing your tracks? I’m thinking about starting getting some videos up on YouTube and some bits and bobs on Soundcloud, but there must be some surefire ways of getting referrals along. Anyone using advertising to any level of success?

I’ve had the most success working with clients outside of Audiojungle, but I have had one high-quality referral one time that resulted in at least 10 sales + a referral cut. The buyer in question is a good friend of mine and we help each other out when we can.

It helps to have friends.

Another thing I do which helps all areas of business, not just marketing is to study successful people, especially the advice they have to offer. I recommend to anybody that they study the following people for starters:

Tony Robbins Earl Nightingale Marie Forleo Bob Proctor Napoleon Hill Brian Tracy And Les Brown

If it weren’t for them, I wouldn’t be nearly as successful as I am now, even though I’m just starting out in comparison to most others.

I set up soundcloud, youtube, twitter and did a couple of promo for vimeo. I think that more than this is not “doing music” anymore

From a customer’s point of view, I honestly don’t think there is a whole lot you can do – although what’s mentioned above with friends helping out is surely a good approach. You’re making “stock” music, not something that’s destined for radio (by itself). With the exception of a few particular genres (like a piano/guitar solo) I can’t see everyday Joe’s and Jane’s out there purchasing stock music.

So who are you marketing to? Working professionals. For those people that use stock music in their (or customers’)projects IME they aren’t out there looking for one-off tracks very often when they have nothing to do; they’ll spend their time buying collections of stock music. Why? Because they have no idea what their next project will be or what music it will need.

When their collections don’t have that perfect track for the project they’ll go out and buy the one off track that meets their project’s need. And that’s the important point: “meets their project’s need”. Even if you’ve somehow got their attention and they know of a couple great tracks that you’ve put out, if those don’t meet the project’s need then they won’t buy them. And honestly, who is going to remember “that one guy on audio jungle that has that great Ukelele song”? (or what is Pond5? Darn, I can’t remember!)

I certainly don’t want to discourage anyone, but I don’t feel there is much that can be done in promotion. You can promote AJ as a whole; and that’s great for everyone. But for yourself…

IMO, having a large, diverse portfolio is the best way to attract attention. That, and just make GOOD music. I had an instance where I used the name in the metadata of several songs I have to track down more music from a particular guy. I liked his songs and thought he might have something I was looking for. He did.

All my experiences and opinions here….take them for what you paid to get them.
