Hi,

Suppose I want to use some php class or javascript code found on the net.

Can someone from the TF team list what licences are acceptable for commercial usage?

Everytime I try to read the licence definition, I get lost after 2 sentences… I am not a lawyer…

I think this list will help ALL authors around here.

Thanks

I don’t think staff will be able to list every license that is acceptable as I’m sure there are probably quite a few. You might contact the support staff for further clarification.

I do not represent Envato’s legal staff so don’t take this as a concrete answer but from my understanding, the license will need to stipulate that the resource you intend to use can be used for a commercially redistributed purpose. There may be additional stipulations requiring that you credit the author or otherwise.

To best protect yourself, it’s always best to ask the author for explicit permission and explain how exactly you intend to use the resource. Most of the time the author of the resource will be more than happy to allow you to use the resource.

If you have a question about a specific resource license, feel free to ask our support staff or post here in the forums for further clarification.

I hope this helps! :)

Which ever allows you to redistribute the item with or without modifications, individually or bundled with an item.

Jarel, thanks for the reply.

I think answer to this question can be beneficial to all authors around here and that answer should be marked sticky for further references. I can contact support and get the answer (someday) and then make another forum thread with that answer – but that’s not my job I suppose.

Regarding licences, I don’t think there are dozens of them: GPL , MIT,LGPL etc. – this should be really easy to answer. One sentence for each. Are these legal things so hard?

It might be harder than you think. Not necessarily hard, but just something that takes some time to have completed. Legal stuff always takes awhile. I’ll shoot our site manager an email about this to see what we can do.
