OpenCart is a pretty new system on this field. It is normal that it is not so popular. Also, it is a simple e-commerce solution and not so good for a really powerful professional store.

Actually OpenCart and Magento are almost the same age. It just didn’t take off like Magento did.
The reasons for this are probably two-fold:- Not targeted at enterprise customers AND open-source community
- No investment from large benefactor (eBay funds Magento)
