Update notifier in WordPress theme options panel is the best solution for WordPress.

What to do for users who have file_get_contents function disabled for crossdomains ( at least to not show the warning ) ?

I use curl for my update notifier as well as a file_get_contents fallback. To prevent the error I think using @file_get_contents will suppress the error.

Yep, there used to be such a feature on deviantArt (not sure if it still exists) – when you updated your artwork, you could check “This is a major update (your watchers will be notified)”.

That would be a perfect solution!

And I know it’s been a long time coming, but we’ll totally build it in to the marketplaces soon. It’s in the pipeline!

It will be a wonderfull feature, we all have been missing this for long time. I tried out to seutp the version number in the file title, but it was a mess for crosslinking seo references after a few months, so i just avoid it.

I use FAQS as update log. It’ s shame that faqs are not editable (hope this will be an upcoming feature soon too).
