I’m wanting to buy a model but it’s a bit older than I had hoped for. It was made in MAX 7 but I need to open/edit the file in MAX 2010 . Is that possible without errors showing up?

Go for it ! you won’t face any difficulties:
You simply open it with no problems at all. Just as any .Max2010 file. ( File > Open > 3dsMax 7 model.max)
Your max will then simply advise you to resave your file in 2010 format and all.
The model will be 100% functional with no errors whatsoever. You can edit it freely with no problems at all.
The problem is when you have 3dsMax 7 and want to import a 3dsMax 2010 file… It is impossible to open new file versions in Max’s old programs…
Cheers !
I’m sorry 3Alisha! I totally forgot to come back to this thread and say thanks, your comment solved the issue!

There are definitely times I wish there was backwards compatibility!
If you ever get in that bind where you need to say save a 2010 file to Max 7…. exporting FBX .3ds is a good option.
