Envato’s privacy policy creates a worse relationship between buyer and seller.

There is no way to do this currently. It’s one of the many things that authors have asked for over the years and been rebuffed.

But hey, we can sort our forum badges. That sure helped us support our customers better…

The ability to identify and contact buyers is a very slippery slope when you consider the privacy issues or the potential for abuse. Currently this is something that each author is responsible for, whether they direct buyers to an update notification signup or something similar. The best way for authors to offer support is something that we have been reviewing very closely.

No reason why envato does not subscribe a buyer to the purchased item.

Then when it is updated, envato sends the buyer a simple message:

Item XYZ has been updated, click here to review changes. Click here to goto your downloads area. To unsubscribe from item updates for XYZ please click here.

Simple you would think ! Supposedly the worlds biggest code marketplace and yet so behind with the times.

Exactly, even if they didn’t give us the names of the buyers they could still give us the option to mass email all the people that have purchased without giving us the emails.

Something else that would be nice would be a PM’ing system but I wont go off topic here. :)

While I agree that the ability to actually identify your customers could lead to serious privacy issues, your suggestion is awesome and I totally support it.

as a buyer I absolutely do NOT want sellers to be able to (constantly spam me with new offers) I mean update me with anything. I do not want my email shared with anyone outside envato, unless i initiate contact w/sellers, like it is now. I had a seller contact all his buyers including me with an Open .cc (!!) so all buyers saw each other’s email addresses, to to always tell us when he had a new project for sale. Boo.

If anything, it would be good if Envato could have an auto-update email function, that for example if an author updates a project (no more than 1-2x a year), it sends all who bought it an automatic notification, eg “the project (x) you bought from author (y) was just updated, download the latest version if you wish”

^ It doesn’t have to go trough the email. It can be a tab in the dashboard for example. Like the new comments – new updates.
