How come people buy music that requires 2 hours to be finished? A really strange world we live in.

Well if a track takes 2 hours, and sells for $14 (meaning we get $7 or $8) thats a pretty low going rate for us…

People buy because often times affordability beats out quality concerns! Lame…

Serious – 3-4 days takes one track.

I hear Hans Zimmers rate is equivalent to about $4,000 per minute…not to shabby.

Or a solid $4.62 if you’re non-exclusive :)

But sell it twice, and your rate doubles. Sell it 10 times and you’ve made $35 – $40 per hour. Sell it 100 times and you’ve made $350-$400 per hour on that track, with no extra effort. Obviously not every track is going to sell 100 times, but 10 is certainly realistic, especially over a span of years that it will be available for sale on AJ.

Anyway, back on target – I spend more time on my songs now than I used to, but it’s still generally no more than 5 hours spread out over the hour long stints I can get in the studio after day job and house stuff. Sometimes things will take longer, but almost always because they’re just not coming together properly. Interestingly (maybe), my top selling songs actually were ones I spent the least time on, and some that I spent the most time on haven’t done as well.

2-4 hours for me… then I will mix on another day…

If it’s a new instrument, it can take longer. The Pedal Steel has been tough! It’s great practice to record tracks for AJ and compose at the same time!

The Ukelele was a fun little instrument. : ) seems to be required here…

Cheers!

Depends on complexity but very simple things maybe 2 hours up to 4 days for more complex music. Also I spent more time when I’m new to the style of music I’m trying to produce. Anyway I think the more experience you have the faster you work.

Hey I’m new to AJ and this is my first post, I don’t understand how some people could compose – orchestrate – mix – master in a few hours…. let’s be honest :) I’m not talking about logos or 20 seconds loops obviously… I for example can finish a 2 minute decent not to complicate track in at list an entire intense day, but more probably 2 or maybe more. But then again there are indeed times when music…just “comes” to you and flows so easily…until you get again to the technical mixing etc. part…and those 20 joyful minutes of composing become hours of adjustments… Discipline is the key anyway ;)
