This is slightly related to age and experience too. It would be difficult to keep ourselves on track if we have no sufficient experience on working for “others” with “others decisions” (No matter how much talent / passion we have). I mean join with a company / team and you will see a magic in couple of years (not a possibility if you are studying now). And then even if you work individually, external forces will not be needed to keep concentration. The driving force can be derived from own needs.
Few things can help:
- Remove games if any (
)
- Logout twitter/facebook etc
- Move your computer into a place where it proves productivity

Alone in the dark headphones noise reducer music that’s it .
I have this same problem :\
Totally agree , put fb staus. I am busy for the next two weeks. If i post a status in that time ignore me.
Then shut the bugger down.
what i do to keep me concentrated is first of all to wake up early, at 7am / 7:30am, then i check my emails to see if nothing bad occured during the night, then i take my breakfast, shower etc… and i started working just after that. Check the RSS , check forums, news, for 30min, and i start replying to emails. When all that is done i work. To keep me interested in my work i try all the time to learn new things and try to do things better. Fo example if i’m used to something and i know i can improve it, i improve it is my new development. AND the most important i try to all time work on things that i love. If a project does not present an interest for me i prefer not to accept it, and start on something really interesting for me. About FB, and Twitter, i just set them on another screen, not on the main one so that i don’t have my eyes directly on it.
Come on, more work is more earnings. More earnings is … more holidays, nice things to buy, presents to offer… don’t you want to buy a new nice ring to your girlfriend? A new game for your dog? Flowers for your mom? or whatever!
I’m not 100% full concentrate with my work, maybe each 30 minutes, maybe I play games to beat the boring and get the creative ideas.
That’s I’m doing

Music. Without music I become slow and get distracted easily.
Try to use a good pair of headphones that isolate you from external noises and work, search, study, get inspired!

Intervals. Set a goal to accomplish something over a period of time, let’s say 2 hours for example. Then when you’ve accomplished this task, get up, take a 30 minute break, and then repeat the process. This is generally how I work and it keeps me fresh and productive.

CodingJack – that is a good concept. Similar to The Pomodoro Technique -http://www.pomodorotechnique.com/
I would like to be more disciplined. There is a lot of time wasters on web today.
