A client is asking for a template customization, basically he just want to change some content from the homepage like replacing the social media icons to facebook like and google +1 button, changing the recent blog posts to featured post and fixing some issues that he did by himself.

I told him that the work could go around $100 to $120. This is his response:

Wow, to be honest I did not expect such price. I was thinking more about equivalent price of template. Does this price is rigidly enforced by the organization you work for or it’s own pricing and you can adjust? If you decide about it so please let’s negotiate. dollar exchange rate translates into 400% of Polish z?oty (1 $ = 4 z?). Taking the standard salary in Poland, the price proposed by you is 25% of monthly income.

I have no idea to explain how? what? why? to him, or maybe i’m just out of my mind. In fact i’m getting tired of these kind of reaction from clients, i really hate how they see web design as a cheap job, or maybe i’m just a cheap designer with no talent at all. I believe there’s a lot of smarter people here who can “explain” it better, i just suck on that so now i’m giving this to you.

What’s to explain? That’s your price, that’s how you value your own time. If it’s too much for him he need to find someone else. And 1 U.S. dollar = 3.3740013 Polish zloty.

I totally feel you – I have had this so many times. First off, stay as respectful as you can and kill him with kindness.

Tell him that unfortunately you cannot care about exchange rate because you have to think in your currency, not in his.
You can tell him that if he wants it cheaper he can go through the list of things he needs from you and cut out stuff that is not too important. That way he can directly influence the money he will spend.
You can also explain to him that the usual customization rate (at least so is mine) is between $50 and $80 per hour. I would not quote him less than two hours for that.
Then you can explain that the price of a theme here has nothing to do with customization rates. The requirement the client has to accept in order to buy such a cheap theme is that he takes the theme “as is”, without custom work done. If he however would like to have custom work done he has to accept the rates of the developer or designer he chooses.

I personally would get rid of such a customer, I don’t think you will earn a lot here. Neither money nor positive experience.

Good luck!

Oh my God, I had no idea this kind of people still existed :))) But it really really made me laugh though.

It’s not your fault that in Poland the minimum salary is what it is. If he can’t afford your services, he should not buy them. You don’t see people going to the car dealership and tell the sellers “hey, how dare you sell products that are priced 1000 times more than our countries standard salaries” :))). The last time I checked, a Porsche has approximately the same price in France, Germany and Romania, even though the living standard in these 3 countries is very different

I come from Romania. In Romania the standard salary is around $150 – 200. I charge $50 per hour. I studied for 13 years to be able to charge $50 per hour. Just think for a bit. How many years did you study, from the moment you first opened a computer?

Heh that’s nothing. Some of my clients wanted me to build a complete website for 50$. Some are worse than the others but they’re all from hell http://clientsfromhell.net/

Just say “My pricing is commensurate with my experience, and is not flexible. You might have better luck hiring a local developer who is accustomed to Polish pricing.” Done.
