So they’re trying to get a copy of one author’s theme through another author? Are they mental? What makes them think this would be a good idea?

Send a copy of the email to support. Maybe they’ll ban the users or at least warn them.

I’ve got an email from someone begging for a free copy of a theme saying they can’t afford it. My thinking is, if you can’t afford a $35 theme, setting up a website probably shouldn’t be your top priority.

Like the (self-proclaimed) internet millionaires on a certain forum begging for free themes. :)

Throw in something to track your theme (like a 1px transparent png in the theme admin that loads off your own domain and you can track through your stats) and it’s shocking to see who, where and how your work is being used.

There is a certain category of people that even though they have / earn a ton of money, they still wouldn’t pay $35 for a certain thing. They either imagine the thing is not worth $35 or(most likely) they think they should get it for free no matter what, so they pop up and try different methods(like begging others) to get it. The story with “can’t afford it” it’s obviously just an excuse.
