You can contact support and they can give you the permission (and licence) for giving item for free. But it must be one-time thing – ex. to a friend or any other specific person, just not for sharing.

But still, that applies to already accepted items. Maybe they can do smth about the non-yet-accepted ones.

I read it somewhere on the forums, I think it’s credible. Contact the support anyways, maybe they can do something about it.

We once gave away one license in an online contest and everything went just like @aleluja said except we did not receive any special license – but this was years ago. And yes, I am talking about an already approved item so it’s hardly relevant to your case like you said.

How about having an item with $0 price tag on your portfolio? That would make it a win-win scenario; for envato and for the author. To maintain the numbers, each author could be allowed only one ‘free’ item on their portfolio.

We could then market the item outside the marketplace with ‘buy one get one free’ banners.

Since I’m an exclusiv author I’m not allowed of selling or give away one of my items outside the marketplace.

But if I give away an item before I release it here it should be ok.

Am I’m wrong?

You should be fine imo, the rule applies after you upload the item, not before.

I do it all the time. For my repeat customers and those that are in regular communication with me. These are the people I send early concepts mock ups to for feedback. They also help by testing the new item before it is released. As a way of saying “thank you” I always provide a free copy of the theme to those customers before I post it to ThemeForest. I don’t see how or why this would not be allowed.

I don’t believe there is anything in the terms preventing you from doing whatever you wish with your item, as long as when you submit it with exclusivity, it is not available through other channels. Once you remove the item, you can, once again, do whatever you wish.

Hi!

You are free to give out a plugin for free on whatever channels you choose, as long as the item hasn’t already been released on our Marketplaces. Do keep in mind that this might complicate things in terms of support and license management whenever you decide to upload it to our Marketplaces.

Also, when you do decide to upload it here, you will need to have removed any other copy otherwise previously freely available anywhere else on the web, in order to properly align with the Exclusivity Agreement.

p.s: keep the Forum Rules on self-promotion in mind when you release it :D

Hope this helps.
