Ok, I have this question than. Let’s assume I have 500 GB worth of images. Those I definitely want to keep, but not to occupy space on my machine. So those will be moved to an external HDD or DVDs (anybody still using DVD ’s around?!).

Yes! Always a good decision. There are no moving parts on a DVD , so no failure expected. But still a best practice to have dedicated drives for both a backup and a clone, no matter what else you do.

One rule I live by; If it moves now, there will be a time when it stops moving. A hard drive, a car, a person, these things all fail in time…

Or you keep everything on your machine, and then make backups on top of that?

I guess storage dependency is as bad as oil dependency. I’d love to have 100000 TB available and never thing about file size again.

With the price of external HDs nowadays, i think you don’t need to relay on a bunch of DVDs for that storage, even if they never change. I’ve the same, many GB of stock images and stuff, that i don’t want to have of both my machines, so i have them inside my 1TB backup HD, which is always plugged to my machine(s) and moves with me even to the bathroom, and another 1TB HD that is a backup of that backup (run backup each month)

I can think some circunstances when this configuration can run into problems (like if i loose the HD while moving around, and the other breaks while copying it or something) but are somehow unlikely to happen (fingers crossed anyway!)

I wouldn’t go the dvd route. Looks like a pain in the ass to manage. And even with them you can’t be 100% sure. :)

I had backups on CD and DVD back in the 90s and when I tried to recover the files ten years later half of the stuff was broken, so I don’t reccomend to rely to much on one media. Store your precious data at least on two different places.

Gotcha. At the moment when I try to recover, everything is moved back to my iMac so I can use the two external HDD for that. So I’m hoping things don’t go bad with the iMac now. Can’t wait a week to make a back-up. F this, I’m gonna do it now. :)

The alibaba screaming is to make fun of the Tunisian guy you see in the vid. I’m the one recording – that’s where I live now with my fiance. :)

In this video: French guy + japanese wife with spanish kids :)

Italian guy + mexican wife

Romanian guy + moldavian girl

Chinese girl, tunisian guy, and us two.

Crazy crowd no? That’s how my life’s been in the past year. Pretty cool. :)

^ yeah that’s a NAS , well worth a purchase IMO , shop around and try and get one with a low wattage so it’s dead cheap to keep running… most will also run itunes servers and all sorts of other cool stuff too..

DSM is pretty good, runs my Diskstation :)

What NAS do you recommend? I read a bit on the web about them, still got more research to do, but I want to get your opinion as well.

It’s worth mentioning that I’d like to have my backups done wirelessly, through time machine. So if I need an airport extreme to that, the NAS should support it – unless they already have support for wireless back-up. Don’t know much about this as you can see. :)
