Hi everyone, I’m interested what’s your experience with freelancer web sites. Do you get job or looking for job, bid for job, make a lot of things just to make some money.

My experience is poor, new at this. But I have some with freelancer.com and elance. My “problem” with f.e. freelancer.com is that I literally spending a lot of time bidding, and that’s not all, they want to suggest to friends, take exams, pay that, pay that… I lose my time with that. With elance, a lot of my work details, school, details for that and that… With fiverr?? I don’t know, when I go there it’s lika I came to jungle. Now, there is a microlancer.com, new on the market but I’m new at the market too.

What do you think? Which one is the best? What to do, to bid or not to bid?

I tried elance, but it was really a bad experience for me. The problem is that the competition is almost entirely cost based, and you end up competing with people who aren’t really more skilled than you, but they sure are willing to do it for a few bucks less than you.

I have only been on GR for a week or so now, and I’m already having much more luck and much less stress/work than what I was dealing with elance or fiverr

I became really successful on fiverr, but it became too much work. It sucked up 5 or 6 hours of my day, like a full time job. And I was only making 2 0r 3 hundred a week! Who wants to live like that! And my clients were often rude. So I closed shop

Also, it’s my opinion that the best business plan is the one that is scalable. The problem with freelance is that the more successful you are, the more busy you are. For the same amount of work and time you could be developing a passive income that is less stressful and free up more of your most valuable asset in life, time.

Anyway that probably did not answer your question. Just my opinion, disregard :) -Kula

Well, yeah, this is some kind of answer. After some time you choose not to bid :) But in my country making 200-300$ a week is nice money.

I started on freelance websites, I did my first money / bought my first laptop with money from freelancer.com. :P On Elance I got my first job at a big company so yeah, they work pretty good. There are more freelancers now and it’s quite overcrowded compared to how they used to be 2-3 years ago, but it’s still a good shot.

We have started on freelance sites, rentacoder/vworker, and we did pretty good. But once vworker was bought by freelancer, the fun went away. Jungle came in, the bidding was cost related, and that is not fun anymore so we’ve stopped.

Passive income is the best choice for me right now. I’m here for 9 months and with my 47 GR items earn 250-300$ every month without stress like on elance. It’s not much right now but in time I will expand my portfolio and also plan to switch to videohive.

I also started years ago with freelancer dot com. Then, when they bought scriptlance the fun went away, because there was full of coders and the prices went really low.

Then, I switched to odesk dot com, where I am still working occasionally, I do have there a good rating and a nice portfolio with taken exams, etc…I often receive job offers and I take them only when I feel comfortable with the price and the project. From odesk I eanrn about 500$ / month.

This year, in February, I started with codecayon and recently with microlancer. And I like them more because on codecanyon and microlancer you can code what you like, you can work on and develop your own ideas, while on freelancing websites, you have to adapt to client’s needs, get used with client’s environment for every project and start over each time.

What I can recommend for freelancing websites but also for Envato marketplaces is what I have learned also from many years spent as programmer: the client is the most important. If you don’t think about money and put the client and his needs above anything else, you’ll see how you become better and better each day. You have to treat the client with respect and listen to his needs. On odesk for instance I have clients which return to me each time with job offers – even if my price per hour is quite high – only because they trust me and they said they like to work with me.

So, as I said, put the client beyond everything else. Then create for yourself a nice portfolio and take care about rating too. Your rating on freelancing websites means a lot in terms of future job offers.

+1. vworker was much better. after freelancer bought it, everything changed for me. I left it then.
