It actually fairly simple. Just ask the user to input their username and API key. Run a compare-search to see if their purchased items your application exists. If it does, go through with the install, if not… well.. don’t install it.
That’s great, but what if someone replaces the installer with different one (their own) what to do then??

Besides that, the Envato API only returns:

:: Shows the 50 recent sales of the user’s items. :: Returns the last 100 events as seen on the user’s statement page. Only shows data from the last 28 days.

Which would mean, if a users tries to install it, and it has been 28 days ago since he purchased it & in the mean time he has purchased 50 more apps. He is not able to activate it ;)

Like you said, you can’t stop everything :-). I’ve had people email me for support who purposely downloaded form a Warez site…

Maybe Envato could update the API with a callback who bought the selected item. With this you can automatically check if the person has really bought the item. But this will only work for support questions.

That’s 2000 x $17 = $34,000!! down the drain! On just ONE file haring website!

Allthough I totaly agree with you that illegal distribution sucks you cant really count it that way. If we look at typicall conversion rates for freemium services only about 0.5 -2% of the people are willing to pay. I am pretty sure the ratio would be pretty similar in this case, so if there would be no site that distributes your stuff for free, only a small percentage of those 2000 would actually pay for it. Most of them would find another free service/solution/item.

So you probably lose about 170$ – 680$ in this example. Of course it still stacks up if we take into account that this is only one site and that there are many out there that distribute our stuff, but since we really can’t do a lot about it I wouldn’t care too much.

Small changes to the API will make it harder to redistribute the Items but If a billion dollar industrie such as the record industry or Hollywood can’t stop illegal distribution I think we don’t really need to think of trying to do so.

And allthough the Marketplaces are of course much smaller there is still money to be made with illegal downloads, so there will always be people who will try to cicumvent any of our safety measures…
