I like the music for the assassin’s creed series, especially for assassin’s creed 2.
The biggest impression on me composer Akira Yamaoka. He wrote the music for Silent Hill 2: Theme of Laura and Promise. And if the brand new then of course Adam Skorupa with his brilliant work “Tales of The Witcher”.

Yeaaaah man, I remember silent hills music. That game was the perfect example of audio and atmosphere working together. Alan Wake had a similar effect, but not to the same degree as SH.

I agree. Alan Wake has not held up the right atmosphere. While the story in the game is very powerful.
Continuing the theme music from the game, I remember one more game “Heavy rain” really good tracks in the game, quite atmospheric.
P.S.: Speaking of Silent Hill 2, a year ago I decided to do a cover version of one of the songs by Akira Yamaoka, if you’re interested here is the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrxnu3EeTZk&feature=plcp
I really like the music in Age Of Empires III

As a whole soundtrack anybody who says it’s not Zelda OOT or Majora’s Mask is wrong and I will accept no further opinions on the matter.
But others I found worthwhile checking out are:
Age of Empires 2, Pokémon red and blue, Super mario 64.. do I even need to mention these
Some maybe unknown: Kingdom Hearts http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TG1pRNQAByI&feature=related
Heavy Rain , though it’s mainly a rip-off of the Last Samurai http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2y2GbSQaRak

No-one mentioned Bioshock or Dead Space yet so I will. Outstanding soundtracks. They’re not so melodic or thematic as many the others on this list, but they fit their games like a glove. Particularly Bioshock, with the blend of old-school jazz music and the overbearing 20th century orchestral music really helps immerse you into the underwater world. This kind of orchestral music hadn’t been done before in games, at least not to this extent, and to this level of quality (the score was recorded in LA).
2KGames – makers of Bioshock – still have the original soundtrack by Garry Schymann, (the score, not the songs) available to download here for free – http://downloads.2kgames.com/bioshock/BioShock_Score.zip
Journey also deserves a mention, and also Assassins Creed 2 – specifically the second game. And yes, to the original poster, FF7 is indeed a masterpiece, especially as it was achieved entirely with awful MIDI renderings.
^ never heard Journey awesome indeed
Just realized I didn’t mention Amnesia, one of the best games I’ve played for real, huge part of the experience was the soundtrack: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ytpo2TfRLa4
