Hi All,

I’m contemplating upgrading from CS3 to CS4 . This is for Web Premium (Plus InDesign, Premiere Pro, Encore & After Effects)

The apps I use in the Creative Suite most often are:
  • Photoshop
  • Fireworks
  • Dreamweaver
  • Flash
  • Soundbooth
  • InDesign
  • Premiere Pro
  • Encore
  • After Effects
  • Acrobat
  • Illustrator

I’d appreciate feedback on the upgrade and new features (if any) in any of the apps listed above in CS4 compared to CS3 .

I only have 512 MB in RAM , CS3 hogged sometimes, CS4 runs smooth, I can even use After Effects.

Mostly I use Photoshop, and it treats me so good, everything is so friendly and all the things that made me angry in CS3 are solved.

The greatest change I saw that I was so happy to see is: In CS3 , if you apply a layer mask to a Smart Object it doesn’t get linked, so what I did is put the Smart Object in a folder and the apply the mask to the folder. In CS4 the mask links to the Smart Object as if it were any other layer. If you don’t use Smart Objects too often maybe you don’t mind that, but believe it… changed my life.

Also you can use a file from a program in other in a very easy way, the whole suite has great compatibility with itself, unlike CS3 , in which Flash, Dreamweaver and Fireworks had some troubles with that stuff.

In lllustrator the transparent gradients are SOO worth the upgrade, in Flash the bone tool and real 3D, in dreamweaver everything is nice and easy to find.

CS4 is quite a treat, trust me, It’s really worth it :)

CS4 has tabbed windows, CS3 doesnt. This feature you will love if you sometimes work with more than one document at a time

Are you on Windows or Mac? If the former, you’ll be happy to see the upgraded Fireworks. On the other hand, I’ve read several complaints from Mac users saying that Fireworks CS4 – and the suite in general – has serious performance issues on their platform.

Good luck! :)

I actually hate that feature, it makes drag&drop between documents a pain. You have to undock the tab then drag&drop. If they actually did something like when drag on the name of the tab, the program focus should change to the tab you whant to drop things, but this was to complicated (yes Adobe thats about you)

overall the CS4 can be at times like WOW and other times like … you get it.

Yeah I also hate the tabs. Fortunately you can turn them off, but dragging and dropping while they are enabled is SO frustrating. They should have made it that you can drag a layer from one document into the tab of the other one and have it get placed at the top!

So far I’m liking CS4 , but it feels VERY clunky. I’m running a beast of a machine and in some aspects it struggles. I have video card acceleration enabled and it makes working awesomely fast, but then if I go and drag one of my documents to move it out of the way the window moving animation is very jumpy. Almost like when you move a window in Windows without a video card driver installed.

The whole CS4 line that was majorly upgraded seems very bloated, but many programs appear to have very little change. After Effects being one of them. Aesthetically its very close to CS3 , and feels the same as CS3 when working, but Photoshop is bad.

Try that, it should work, you drag to the name of the tab, wait a sec and it should switch.
