Great question! You always retain the rights to your items. You are the copyright owner. You are simply selling licenses here on Envato Market for other people to use your items. For more info please see http://themeforest.net/author_guide , http://audiojungle.net/licenses , and http://themeforest.net/legal/market
As per our Item Promotion Guidelines however, please note:
“Am I allowed to give away any of my items for free?
Exclusive authors are not permitted to give away items for free that are available on Envato Market. Even if you are giving away your own content that you are selling on Envato Market, via your own, personal web site, this is not allowed. This is permissible however if you are a non-exclusive author.”
You are obviously allowed to use your own items, by yourself, for your own work in the example you stated. Sharing items with colleagues that you are selling here however is actually against our terms and conditions as an exclusive author that you agreed to when you signed-up. If this is a really big sticking point for you then I would recommend either ( i ) inviting your colleagues to purchase your item(s), ( ii ) convert from an exclusive author to a non-exclusive author or ( iii ) create a second account, that’s non-exclusive, and write to Support and ask for permission to move your content from your exclusive account to your non-exclusive account. You also have the option of deleting your item from Envato Market of course if you wish although we’d obviously hate to see that. So there’s always several options to choose from.
Hope this helps!
ok, that is perfect but this rule is absurd as by using logic we find out that forums are hosted on author website and some time that website is a competing marketplaces with envato market
For sure. Nothing is always black and white, this is definitely a gray area, but the main premise of the guideline is to prevent blatant attempts to game the system.
Are those support forum to external website links allowed in the item description area or not? .
Travis has already answered that, Doru: It’s allowed.
Are links to my personal website in the item description allowed or not? I need clear answers about this questions.
No. It clearly states so in the Item Promotion Guidelines article:
“Do promote your personal web site(s) from your profile page, but not from your item pages.”
I have a similar situation. I want to replace 2 tracks (out of 4) in a music pack. I also would like to change the title of the pack. Is this possible or is it better to delete the pack and upload a new pack?
Hi Guido! Submit an update to your existing pack and include the new files you want to sell. Important note however: What you are not allowed to do is take advantage of the update system to continuously update pack content to swap new tracks into an existing pack and promote that as regular content updates to buyer. The system logs these updates which can lead to account disruptions.
Regarding changing an item title: In the comment to the reviewer, let them know what you want to change your title to. Don’t ever delete an item and resubmit when it’s the same item as this is not permitted as it’s considered gaming the system and you may not be allowed to resubmit your item. Good luck!
Hi Doru, our logo(s) are typically available on our affiliates page:http://themeforest.net/make_money/affiliate_program
I see a new logo for the Envato Market API but not for Envato Market. Strange, I’ll find out if that’s intended or not. In the meantime, perhaps you can use the API logo for now and manually remove the API box? Not ideal, but hope that helps short term.
Assuming i create a theme, and the theme relies on a free plugin, the plugin also has extensions that are compatible with theme and sold on my own site, can i link the extensions into the theme description? How else would the buyer be aware that the theme is compatible with those addons?
Hello again, TD, I haven’t forgotten about you and your previous questions, I promise.
Subject to official confirmation, this may fall under “common sense” and may be permitted. Especially as this is partly and indirectly answered already with the following:
“Can I put functionality, required for my theme to work, into a free plugin and then include that plugin with my theme? Yes, we encourage this. You can find more information behind this scenario in our WordPress Theme Submission Requirements article.”
That said, there IS some complexity here because it’s offering something for sale outside of Envato Market so just to be clear for now, I just have to get the green light about that however from our TF/CC representative before we update the article and make it official. That person has been tied-up with a bunch of other projects unfortunately, which has prevented a quicker response. Thanks again for understanding, TD, you’ve got the patience of a saint and it’s much appreciated.
I don’t think we’ll ever beat Mister Chicken. Although, if we ever get permission to share with you some of the things reviewers have rejected over the years, you’d be in for a royal treat…
Speaking of “royal”, this is another of my favorites. Totally nails a London / cockney accent and some of the phrases are priceless.http://audiojungle.net/item/british-cockney-london-accent-phrases-143/4265324
On Topic: I’m going to start a website for myself. I’m an exclusive author and my site is just my portfolio on ThemeForest + support and similar content. Oh and I won’t put any links to any competitors.
So if I’ve understand correctly, I can’t even put a link to my site on my items description page. Right? Thanks for info
Hi Iman! You are correct – item pages cannot have promotional links to personal Web sites. Only profile pages permit this. Obviously, as Travis stated, common sense can (and should) prevail – if you’re linking to a support forum for example, that makes total sense.
Our guidelines are in place to prevent anyone abusing the system, to prevent anyone gaining unfair advantage over other authors, and to avoid any race to the bottom where promotion is concerned.
