Without opening a new thread, was just wondering the following. Can i still add items to the exchange or is it disabled for After Effects? I somehow can’t access the exchange panel through CC. Sorry if it’s too off-topic.

I don’t have any experience with AMD and ATI brands so sorry i can’t help you much on that regard. To change everything to Intel would mean a new motherboard etc and the budget isn’t sufficient so i’m just going to address some of the more ’’generic’’ hardware you can invest in.

First of all i would throw everything you can in a new chip that is faster but compatible with your motherboard so you won’t have to upgrade that and save cost for other important things. Processor speeds / amount of cores/threads is the most beneficial in any software so this is your biggest priority, if you can get a significant amount of extra speed out of your system with a different processor chip i would look into that first.

*please note that this upgrade should be noticeable enough without sacrificing your full budget into it, as upgrading the more generic pieces of your hardware ensures more benefit in the long run. For example – you could just leave your processor alone and simply invest in more RAM and GPU/SSD’s since you can always use these later in new systems, the processor/motherboard however you can not in most cases.

Since After Effects is all about RAM i would invest in in more RAM earlier then a better GPU. Although i don’t know how your current videocard compares up to others, if you seriously want a new card for element3d and the raytracing functions you can simply pick one ATI card out of this list. (if i’m not mistaken)

With a budget like that to upgrade your current system i would recommend upgrading to 32GB of ram at least and 2 ssd’s mainly for your software and 1 purely for caching purposes, the sizes of these ssd’s depend on how much you want to spend.

I would take some time to research some of the newer SSD’s on the market before you go ahead and buy them. Since allot of the newer SSD’s advertise themselves as the fastest on the planet etc and have a (at first glance) a huge amount of write speed, they tend to be targeted more for the average consumer instead of us big data pushers. Get an SSD that writes fast continuously and doesn’t degrade after a certain amount of mb’s have been written to the disk. So invest in consistency of speed instead of those ’’lightning fast speeds when you write 500mb and after that the speed drops to 100mb/sec’’ You can see how this can influence render/caching times quite significantly.

Get a ssd that writes 350mb/sec continuously for example without the ’’new technology speedboost’’ is my advice. You pay a bit more maybe for less data but hey, this again takes you to how much you want to spend and prioritize.

Long story short.

Invest in RAM and SSD’s first. CPU only when it gives you enough bang for the buck. GPU if you really need it/your current is too slow etc.

Sorry for this wall of text again, i need to work on my ’’get to the point skills’’ when writing. Hope it helped in anyway.

When asked how much I wanted I said I’ll let it go for $3000 (equal to 15 months income on average for the item), the buyer said I’m crazy… “Item is only $20, how can you sell it for $3000”. I explained the maths to him and he never replied.

3k is damn cheap, i would’ve taken the deal lol. But yeah, what i wanted to say: replies like that tend to make my head boil :P

If you work with more than 1 display intuos4 S is too small and could be unpleasant work with it. I recommend the Medium or Large size for a comfortable work.

I work with a single 27inch screen these days. Would you say the small one is sufficient for that as i assume the size of your monitor is also a factor?

I don’t even use much space with my mouse now i actually look at it and think about it. The space i use my mouse on is even smaller then a small tablet if i got the sizes calculated correctly. I was thinking to go with the small sized one first and upgrade later if needed.

I am annoyed and fascinated at the same time.

Can i ask which one you got exactly? Would you say a small version is sufficient to work with or is the medium just perfect etc? Good luck getting used to it! :D

Anyone tried the Cintiq 24 yet? It’s expensive but I think it would solve all of life’s little problems ;) http://www.wacom.com/us/en/creative/cintiq-24-hd

It looks awesome indeed, must be fun to play with but it’s a bit too much so to say :)

I was thinking about purchasing the Wacom Intuos4 4 S first. It ships here for around 90euro’s, the only thing i am doubting upon is the fact it’s the S version so its 160mm by 100mm so its pretty small (i have no idea how this plays in.. at all), but then again if i want the medium version i’m paying more then 300 euros, i’m a bit hesitant to pay that much money for something i don’t know if i will use for more then a month. Hmm what to do what to do..

Hey, On aescripts’s discussion forums I posted this issue and got an answer from Lloyd Alvarez that this is a bug from adobe. So, this is a known issue and adobe never solved it.
Wouldn’t be the first time.

God.. i don’t know why i laughed hysterically at this.

I have no wrist issues, yet. I’ve been thinking about a tablet for some time now. It’s great this thread got started. I’ve been trying to convince myself If I really need it or not. As people say, it is certainly an awesome tool for drawing matte paintings, digital sculpting etc. I do not really draw much (unfortunately..) How about more non-specialized everyday tasks like working in Ae, Cinema, Photoshop or even browsing the web? You know, motion-graphics-wise. How does it play with the keyboard or even funnier question – does it make typing with both hands more difficult :) ? Do I need to keep my mouse pluged-in (that sounds a bit wierd, eh?) for certain tasks or it’s completely obsolete once the tablet takes over? Thanks!

I was thinking the exact same thing, it’s why i started the thread. I read everywhere it’s great for drawing and just more comfortable in the long run. But as i have been using the mouse for more then 10 years now and also not draw much sadly etc (i used too when i was in school when we had no computers yet ! :D). The questions you ask here are exactly what i would want to know as well. Using it in Cinema and AE, browsing just the everyday stuff, using it in combination with the keyboard.

Any Cons when using a wacom at all? Or are there simply none?
