I only use the full URL on all of my Youtube videos..i have never had problem. Do you think people click shorter url’s in general though?
Maybe people do, but I tend to stay away from any shortened links because I want to see where I’m going before I click.
Yes I also avoid them too, hmm, difficult..
(I use bitly) Hmmm… I’ve never thought about that.. but yeah, me too. Matt? ;)

Fortunately, these days Bitly links are generally safe, because they use internal and external classifiers and data to determine whether the destination site is spam, virus or malware. Shorteners were abused massively when they first appeared on the scene, but that was quite a few years ago now and things have changed greatly since then.

That said, although not as problematic as it once was, this issue with shorteners does exist and if you’re still unsure, it’s possible to preview the actual destination URL by copy/pasting the Bitly URL to the browser and simply adding + the the end of the link. This will reveal the full length URL so you can see where the link takes you.

Going back to using the full length URLs however, we have to practice caution with this as Google/YouTube may be seeing these as doorway affiliate links to content providers, and from an SEO perspective could actually have a massively detrimental effect on both the referrer and in this case, even Envato themselves.

Google basically dislikes this practice and can severely penalise sites or remove YouTube videos that are associated with it. I’m aware that last year, one major AJ referrer basically saw their web traffic die over just a matter of days, simply because their pages were filled with (full-length) URLs to AJ music pages, most likely causing Google to penalise it as a ‘doorway’ site. Sadly, Google rarely make life any easier for us online sellers!

interesting. i have been noticing that my videos have been getting less view..but i still getting referrals. Do you think im getting less views because of full links?

Thanks everyone. Yeah, something’s not right here. It looks like since I switched it to a smartURL link I have received absolutely zero YouTube referrals from even my most-viewed videos. Seems really unlikely. I’ll change it back to just the regular full link and see if things change.

Quick tip, but I’d be careful with using the full URL link in the description PZ. I’ve heard that YouTube tends to keep an automated eye on that to prevent spam and so called ‘doorway’ links to external sites, so Bitly is definitely the better option here.

When I switched my links out from full URLs to Bitly a couple of years ago, I did indeed notice a big improvement in referrals.

I only use the full URL on all of my Youtube videos..i have never had problem.
