Here I am again… long story short:
I made a WP wedding theme, it got hard rejected.
After having received some feedback I returned to the design stage and then I worked on the PSD layout only, fixing and improving it as much as possible.
Submitted then a new PSD template (just to focus on the design aspect). Hard rejected again. No damn feedback from the reviewer.

Here you can check it:

It comes in 3 colors variations, a mobile/narrow version and other bonus elements. Everything grid aligned and pixel perfect.
I know it may be look simple and essential, but that was the original intent.

Do you honestly think that this design is not ThemeForest worth? Suggestions?

I am really very close to “throw away” everything, which I think it’s a shame (especially after a month of work), so I am truly in need of a good advice :)

Thanks!

Thank you sevenspark for the suggestions! I agree on the menu, and I will definitely try to adjust the vertical rhythm as well.

Hi!

I submitted today my new WP theme, a responsive single-page wedding theme that you can check here: http://www.andrea.baroni.name/wp/gettingmarried/

It got rejected… I can accept that of course, but the problem is the generic rejection response I got, which I truly hate: “The overall quality of your submission does not meet our aesthetic and technical requirements and will need to be improved before being resubmitted. Unfortunately we’re not able to provide more specific feedback for your submission at this time.”

Ok, I don’t seek sympathy here… just a honest feedback on how to improve it. I am usually very self-critic and I have been creating websites for many years now, so I think that I can be enough objective with my work. What I honestly think is that this theme of mine does not deserve this “it’s so bad I will not even waste my time helping you in improving it” treatment.

It is a simple single-page theme.. it’s not meant to be fully featured, to have a blog or to be sold as an expensive WP theme (we are talking of a wedding theme after all, not a corporate network).

Does it lack too many features? (a guestbook maybe, I was willing to add it later, but for the first release I hoped this to be enough) Does it have a bad design? Is the way I created the back-end?

I can anyway assure that the admin is technically well-done, with custom posts, custom admin screens, shortcodes editor, etc.. and the help manual (that you can check here: http://www.andrea.baroni.name/wp/gettingmarried/helpmanual/help_manual.html ) is very detailed… but I truly doubt that the reviewer got this far in reviewing my item.

So, I don’t really know where to go from here, and I feel really disheartened by this response from the reviewer. Do you think that submitting the psd layout alone would be a good idea? (so to focus on the layout first)

Sorry if I may sound a bit annoying here.. I just need some help from the community :)

Thanks!

ps: I know my theme has the same name of another wedding theme here that just got approved some days ago… bad luck, since I decided the name almost a month ago. But I think that this is not among the rejection causes (and I will change the name anyway I suppose).

Thank you again guys for your helpful feedback.

After 3 days of hard work in improving the design I re-submitted the theme today, and now what… it took 30 minutes for the reviewer to reject it again…
...the really worst thing is that I explicitly asked for more feedback in case of another rejection. I know the reviewers are busy, but that fuc$#&g email template that says only:

“Thanks so much for taking the time to submit this template. Unfortunately, due to our current quality standards, your template has been declined.”

doesn’t encourage anyone to make a better work, or to understand where are his faults.

I really prefer to wait more time in the queue, but have a better review (30 minutes, and I was 14th in the queue… how much time has the reviewer spent on my theme? 2 minutes?).
I am really discouraged now, and thinking of leaving ThemeForest… sorry to bother this forum with my complaints (even if from what I can see I’m not alone… :) )

For those who want to see again my theme here it is (updated version):
http://www.andrea.baroni.name/envatoPreviews/origami/

For sure it’s not the most original of themes, for sure there are better themes than this one (but it’s my first one and, speaking straight, there are many worse than mine), and for sure there is room for other features (but I was willing to add them after the release, as I always do with my products here on Envato, thanks to the customers feedback)... but for sure it’s well made, also from a code/back-end point of view, and I really believed it deserved a chance.
If there is something so evident that I am not seeing well… the reviewer should have made me notice.

I’ll stop complaining now… thanks again to all who have helped me.

Hi all, and really thanks for your feedback… everything can be useful to improve the theme!

I will start working on an improved version of the theme… and let’s hope it will get accepted soon.

About the originality and the fact of being creative… I know that this theme is not differentiating too much from the mass of other WP themes, but I tried, as a first theme, to create something very neutral and generic… a sort of corporate template but with a vein of creativity, shown especially in some of the styles (like the crumpled paper one).

I am willing to improve this theme with more features and styles… and even to create new “brave and creative” themes in the future, but everyone need to start from something, and I decided to follow a relatively “safe” path.
If the theme is really TOO generic and uninteresting (without any hope of redemption) I think that the reviewer should say that, so I know that all my efforts in improving it are essentially vain.
The most depressing thing is a generic reject, like the one we received today me and PerfectPixels, after so many weeks of hard work…
...well, I will try now not to get too depressed :)

Hi PerfectPixels,

seems we are on the same boat :)
Thanks for your comment.

About your theme: I like it, and I hope it’s just a matter of details.
The idea of the post images blended behind the text is very original, but I have some doubts about the final results… the images looks a bit confused and not so much recognizable, with a sort of global “acid colors” effect, looking at the page as a whole.
I really like the font menu, but in my opinion, for some reason, it seems not to work properly for the other titles (especially posts and sidebar).
No other notes from my point of view…

...let’s hope our themes will get approved in the end! :)

Hi bringthepixel… thanks a lot for your feedback! Took note of your suggestions :)

Remove that ugly glow from logo :) + change logo text color to something brighter
At first there was no glow (I agree with you… it’s not so good looking), but being a black/gray text unfortunately it disappears when switching to “night blue” color scheme. Maybe I should find a way to change it with another image when switching to that color scheme, or find another way to make it looking good on all the different styles.
Anyway… I hope it didn’t weight on the rejection, since it’s something that is only meant for the demo (I believe that no one will use that for its own website/blog).

Zebra efect in post comments: I think it’s good idea to highlight only odd comments not all
The zebra effect is only for the “post author” comments… maybe I should make this clearer in the demo

Hi guys! First time writing here on the ThemeForest forum… being an AudioJungle and ActiveDen author since a couple of years I decided to start selling also here on ThemeForest.

I am not promoting my work, but I am more in need of help from who is more experienced than me in this field.

After more than a month of work I created my first Wordpress theme, called “Origami”. You can see its demo here:

http://www.andrea.baroni.name/envatoPreviews/origami

I submitted it here on TF and received a reject today from the reviewer (should be kailoon if I don’t get wrong), saying:

“Your template’s design does not meet our quality standards at this time and will need significant improvements before it will be ready to be reviewed again. You might consider taking a look at some of our popular premium items to get a better idea for the quality level of graphics, typography and general design that we require for approval.

At this stage in the design I am, unfortunately, not able to provide more specific feedback other than what I’ve stated above (the design needs overall, general improvements). With further improvements I may be able to provide more specific feedback.”

Now, I am a bit lost… and I humbly ask for feedback and help to understand what is wrong with my theme.

I can call myself a web designer, since I designed and created many websites (with good results I hope), but I can (and must) improve for sure, so I am very open to suggestions and critics. I believed, with this theme Origami, to have created something at least “good”. It is my first theme for Wordpress, so most of the work went to the back-end, coding, configuring, etc… but I also spend several days in designing something good and useful, and with a personal touch too. The theme has space for many new features and improvements, but I thought it to be ready for the release, since I have seen many themes here on TF with less features and options than this one.

So… I really can’t throw away more than a month of work, and I really need help in understanding what does not meet the quality standard and what can be improved.

Thanks

I am currently doing this, under a suggestion from the Envato guys here in the forum… and i think (and hope!) that it is perfecty legal.

The only downside is that you cannot link the two accounts, so you have to build two “reputations” (but I used the same name with just an “X” at the end…) :D
