Hey, Envato staff, if anyone of you reading this message, it means that I am no longer alive because internet pirates have killed me. Kidding.
Seriously though, I have an idea for you and for all authors from videohive. Many authors from videohive are willing to pay to protect their projects. What if you will make something like a Competition-Startup for devs? It’s necessary to create a script that will ask a purchase code when opening a project that was purchased from videohive.
Why I called it “Competition-Startup”?
1. The prize fund will be formed by 20-30 authors from videohive. For example each authors will give $100 and when the script will be ready, these authors will get the script.
2. Those authors, who did not create the fund, will be able to buy the script from Codecanyon (or from VideoHive, section Add Ons).
I am not a programmer and I find it hard to say, as much it is possible to create such script. But if it possible, then I think this “Competition-Startup” will be the fastest and most convenient way to create this script. And everyone will be happy – developers will get cash reward + an opportunity make money by selling the script, authors from will protect their projects, Envato will save money on the development and in the future will make a profit because the script will reduce piracy of projects.Well, what do you think?
if something like this is possible i would definitely buy this script / plug in!
also it could be nice if the purchase code includes the buyers name and is usable only for – let’s say – five times when you open the project. Then you will have to re-download the project with new purchase code and the old will be unusable. Or something like that… developers know this stuff better. Maybe i’m talking about sci-fi scenarios.
The bottom line is that i would pay for some piracy protection.
everything is in constant move. Evolving. Changing. If vh won’t be lucrative in the future.. something new will be. On the other hand, i believe that if you can interpret and express reality with a new perspective.. your effort will never be a waste.
CodingJack saidI’m curious about this rabbit hole. So let’s say there is a big benefit for Envato for doing this, then how can we be sure there is not going to be big disadvantage or consequences for authors?
But there’s a big reason why things are being stated the way they are. You just have to look a little deeper down the rabbit hole.
Envato is no longer a small company and grew up to be a multi million company. Now they see that they can make / change the rules in their advantage and assuming that the “small” and divided community of authors will go along even if it is causing problems for them. It’s a very similar situation as in a factory. The owner will change the rules and step on the fear of someone losing his job / earnings. In this way people conform to the new rules. BUT the big thing sometimes the workers forget, is that they are the roots of this multi million ecosystem (or egosystem? i wonder). If the roots are unsatisfied the Tree will die. It’s a very simple equation in theory. In practice everything goes down the drain. Fortunately not always.
As it seems envato was forced to comply with the even bigger Tree, the European Union. So VAT changes are here or about to. When a problem arrives to a big company, the company will try to conform in the things they can’t avoid and all the other problems will pass by to the smaller parts of the machine/hierarchy. In our case, the authors. Additionally when the “waters” are muddy, as it is now, it’s the best opportunity to pass even more new rules and just say is all about the Big problem, VAT let’s say. I’ve seen quite few times real and solid questions rise from authors. I’ve also seen quite few times representatives of envato “reply” by re-directing the answer to the big problem of VAT, which sometimes was logical but also sometimes was just playing with words and avoiding the real answer by re-direction. The worst was that i’ve seen posts deleted.
The Boss in order to earn big bucks will try to exploit the workers, openly or in a disguised way. De facto. The choice is on the worker. He will swallow this as a inevitable fact or he will stand up? Standing up, can take many forms.
I’m a part time author here and not a big earner. For now i will give them the benefit of a doubt and continue trying to see/grasp the big picture. If actions and policy will continue on this new uncertain path without making adjustments for authors comfort, i will take my few items and relocate them on some other friendlier environment.
The past three years i’ve used to say the best words about envato and advertising them to friends and clients, without a doubt. Now, unfortunately i don’t feel the same anymore. I hope they will disproof me and take me on their side again. We will see..
My kind regards. Bogz
Until now november is the best month of this year.
December started extremely bad though. No sales yet.
in a refresh 40+ followers vanished! I guess envato is deleting inactive accounts or something?
When a client wants to make minor adjustments to a template (color change, text change) and create a second very similar end product, he needs a new licence, right?
What if the client wants the author to customize the template beyond the basics (not just replacements but creation of new design) and then he wants to produce by himself the video in different colors and texts?
I’m in this dilemma because i’m charging extra the customization and then i have to tell him, that for every change/different render he needs to buy a new licence, even if he already purchased a regular licence and i extra charged him for the customization. I feel a bit awkward on this..
Thank you in advance, Bogz
