I use Eastwest QLSO Gold, and love it. It’s very hollywood sounding, so great for epic-scale film scores, but maybe the reverb on the samples is a bit too much for smaller pieces where you don’t want a big dramatic sound. I’d give it 9.5/10!

If you’re starting out, you may want to consider Kontakt 4 – it’s a sampler which comes with 43GB instruments including orchestral stuff from Vienna Symphonic Library (very versatile – probably not as ‘grand’ as QLSO but would blend in with a lot of other styles of music) and also some great grand pianos, jazz brass, a choir, guitars…

I own kontakt 2 and love it – 4 is even better. Almost every track I write features some instruments from this library! If I were starting out from scratch, I’d pick Kontakt as my first purchase.

+1 . This is key for a stock music site!

Hopefully we’ll all be on html5 audio tags soon anyway…

I already own this – great for when you want to work out the key of something when you’re on the go.

Two buttons: One with “buy this track for 12 straight away” one next to it with “deposit money and get this item for only $10” which leads to deposit page.

Out of all my tracks, the least experimental sell the best. All my tracks use concert pitch notes – you can create enough dissonance from the 12 notes in the western system anyway.

Just an idea, but Envato or somebody else could always make a simple offline “envatoifier” app (adobe AIR or something) that you can download and drag your files onto. That way people can choose to do things their own way or let the app watermark your music for you.

There’s nothing magical about copywriting your track – you just have to put a© next to it or mention a license when you sell it. Copywriting only means something if you take someone to court for infringing it.

The reason people go to big institutions is that they will have a legal team which will protect the music, and a legally valid license made for you. If you’re making big bucks, then this may be worth it, but remember even the music industry doesn’t catch everyone who illegally resells music.

As for me, I dont’ copywrite anything on AJ (though I have previously put things under creative commons like http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/ when it was for a free project). Nobody can resell it on AJ, as they’ll quickly be caught, and if they sell it on another stock site, you can always tell them – no stock site will want illegal music to sell. Your AJ sales will not suffer either way.

There is nothing you can do to ultimately guarantee nobody will resell your music, even with a big team of lawyers to track and prosecute.

Just found this on the CM reader blog:

For 72 hours, TC are giving away a free reverb VST (usually 97usd)

I’ve just given it a short play, but it seems pretty good – beats the one that comes with cubase. You can download it at http://www.tcelectronic.com/freetcreverb.asp but this offer ends in a few days!

Edit: oh, and it supports mac :D
