Hi there! I’m recording my tracks using Logic with a midi controller and SuperiorDrummer installed, and, as most of you know, one of the more tedious work in this field is get a really nice drum performance or the most realistic possible, without an electronic drumset or something similar, only a keyboard to execute the rhythm and fills.I’m a drummer, so I hate to listen the final performance recorded an find so many mistakes that wold’t be there if I had an electronic drumset. But I haven’t got the money either.
So, is there a way to make this drum tracks more HUMANIZED avoiding heavy work? Any suggestion?
First of all, unless you play it in perfectly the first time there no way to get the performance you want without “heavy work”. Believe me it’s worth it though. It’s really all about dynamics. Things like grace notes, accidental stick hits, and tempo swinging. Try to separate the drums into to snare, kick, and hat/OH. Go through each and really think about what you would physically play and why that sounds “real” compared to other midi performances. Volume/intensity dynamics, you’ll find, are what makes a convincing midid performance.
Remember too that there are no rules either. You can play what ever you want, and have as many midi notes as your heart desires as long as the listener will be sold.
Anyway, as a rule of thumb when messing with dynamics, remember that not all drum hits are heard. Esp the hi-hat, which will be the most dynamic in the entire kit. Use the full velocity range and you’ll find it has a more human feel to it.
Happy drumming!

Pavel “CHA!”
Agreed Pavel! I bring my music with me everywhere I go, often just as an escape. I feel more confident with the right music in my head. I swear, music can change your mood like nothing else in the world.. And writing it is some of the best self reflection one can do. To be able to listen you what you created months or years ago, and remember exactly what you were feeling or what you were going through, I think that’s just amazing. As Brandon Flowers put it: “I got soul, but i’m not a soldier”
