I’m not trying to be dismissive, but why do you care? If people are happy with what they have why does it matter to you if there is a lot of similarity?
I agree with you especially when it comes to corporate themed designs, they look similar but still aren’t which gives me options to first, find the design with the right ‘feel’ for the client and second, to still have many great designs to choose from for other clients.
As a result of this I believe the argument against all these ‘similar’ themes is flawed for as for one who buys these themes to use for clients, no matter how similar the themes are, when I’m shortlisting themes I’m actually looking for an intangible ‘feel’ of the theme that would fit my client that an author cannot really design specially for.
I’m also giving my feedback as an end user for the benefit of the authors who are following this thread.

It does absolutely no good to end users, in furthering their knowledge of web design , and enhancement. Merely allows them to use a very cool tool, mastered and themed by geniuses.
But essentially, if i ruled the world I would ban it
I’m glad you don’t rule the world
. I would respectfully disagree and caution about painting with such a broad brush. These ‘geniuses’ who ‘mastered and themed’ this cool tool are geniuses at what they do which is why they do it. There are other ‘geniuses’ who are masters at other things and if I ruled the world I’d be glad to have geniuses in all the different crafts.
I’m a ‘Wordpress Configurer’ and I have no interest in learning how to theme but I have an interest in going beyond a basic understanding of how it works and I learn something new every day, either in PHP , J-Query, Javascript as I go along.
I suspect that many of these Wordpress newbies on TF are not like me who configure WP themes for a living, they probably got the job at their work, or got asked by a friend, or just plain starting out trying to find their way.
My own ‘genius’ is required for website marketing, promotion, Graphic Design, SEO , content writing, email and social media marketing, maintenance, choosing the right theme, finding the right images, icon sets, determining best layouts, designing forms and questionnaires, finding the right people to handle their accounting system after they realize they can trust me, finding the right people to fix their computer network, hooking them up with good photographers for their portfolio, hooking them up with good videographers for their YouTube Channel and above all knowing what questions to ask when a client asks for a website when he doesn’t know what he needs beyond that except that his business needs a website.
Sorry but I don’t have much time to further my knowledge of web design

First of all, if a prospecting client sees a gorgeous site and asks you to do something similar, you won’t be able to. So, if you want to remove the attribution, go for it, but don’t change it to your name. Either leave the attribution in there and add “Modified by…” or get rid of it completely.
I respectfully disagree. I see nothing wrong with ‘Site by:...” I would never put ‘Modified by…” Just don’t say ‘Designed by…” if you didn’t design it and ‘Site by…” leaves enough room for the website ‘modifier’ so it looks like he knows what he’s doing. I would also not leave the original attribution as I don’t want visitors clicking and going to the theme author’s site as that doesn’t concern them.
If a competitor wants to check the code and see the theme name (which I leave in the original) and then Google it (which I do with my competitors) then so be it. On my site I clearly indicate that I use themes in no uncertain terms. At worst, do not put ‘Site by…’ and just put your site link for you’ll still get the credit for the site with that
. Smiley face for the spirit of my 2 cents.
For all my sites I just put “Site by:....” and put my link. All my clients view theme demos I shortlist then pick one they like so they know they’re templates. I would stay away from putting ‘Designed by” to avoid problems.

CLINE123 saidI don’t understand how that design is niche. Other than the name, it’s just a generic “business” theme to me. I’m not trying to take anything away from it’s design or success I just disagree with it being a niche theme.
hellojon saidSorry, I meant that the ECOBIZ theme as a perfect example of a niche theme that was well designed and has spectacular sales.
When you talk about the ECOBIZ theme, what do you mean? The author just designed something entirely on his own and didn’t adopt the standard content arrangements? Thanks for the insight.
I disagree with it being a generic business theme as the author even referred it also being a ‘eco/green business’ theme as well it can be used for business. By ‘niche’ Parallelus I’m not being absolute but if a theme (like this) can be used out of the box for a particular purpose with minimal re-configuration then it would be a great seller and not only that it would also draw the buyer even with the slightest bit of semblance of niche which is a point I want to emphasize.
Right now I have clients for 3 educational institutions (for one of them I bought Saurabh Sharma’s Cruz) and 2 churches and while I’ll still go about it the regular way, niche themes would do me just fine if I had more theme options.
BTW what a coincidence but the very first theme I ever bought on TF was from iMediapixel (Podium) and the 2nd was from you (Traject)

Niche products? Have you seen ECOBIZ theme? I think that authors here are missing the boat with niche themes. My advice is to put some real thought into a niche theme and structure the content properly. Many people don’t want to think about how to layout even if a generic theme would accomplish the same thing.
